[ they've been texting pretty frequently since beverly called him from the hospital over a week ago. there's something comforting about talking to someone on the outside of this whole mess, someone who's never been to derry or experienced its particularly strange sleepiness — although now it's slowly waking up from the clown's curse.

but today has nothing to do with the clown. today is a late morning text of two subsequent photos: IMG_8222.jpg IMG_8223.jpg. and then — ]

( dean's just pouring himself a cup of coffee when his phone chimes — and despite how grumpy he still feels over the fact that it's morning, he can't help but smile a little when he sees bev's name light up his screen.

he's glad to see she finally made it out of the hospital long enough to grab a real meal. god, he could go for some pancakes. maybe he'll whip some up after he finishes this cup of coffee. sam'll be hungry when he gets back from his morning run. )

if i were anywhere near maine i'd drive by and take the rest off your hands

( he pulls up the photo of the diner again, zooming in on the door. he can't quite make out the name, but there's something familiar about this particular diner he can't quite place. )

what's the name of this place?

[ the time difference between them is just an hour — but in the morning, especially with the schedule the two of them keep, you feel that hour. she doesn't expect him to answer straight away and to be honest, she never has; but he always does. it makes her smile, too, in the way newly rekindled friendship does. that's been the theme of the past two weeks, hasn't it?

the losers are still in town doing their own thing, never too far away from each other. but at least it's safe to be alone now. bev's missed the breakfast crowd and is too early for lunch which means she's got the diner to herself and the company on her phone. it's nice. ]

( to be honest, dean hasn't had a real friend outside of his brother in a long time, so it is nice to be able to just ... chat with someone. no expectations, no guarantees. just two adults having a normal conversation about normal things like breakfast. it's a welcome change of pace, a nice reminder that for most people the world keeps on spinning without a damn clue about evil clowns and secret societies.

nicky's rings a bell he hasn't thought of in years — yeah, yeah, why didn't he see it before? when purgatory spit him out, he wound up in the backwoods of maine. he never thought it would be so specifically relevant. )

shit i can't believe that was derry they still have that surf n turf burger on the menu? i'm telling you i'd kill for another one of those

got stranded out in the boonies on a hunt with a good friend of mine had to hitchhike our way back to civilization and wound up in derry along the way i guess really did just stop in to refuel, didn't stick around to find out where we were just which direction we were headed honestly i'd forgotten all about the town but i never forget a burger

[ they've had one hell of an icebreaker in the form of pennywise and shapeshifters, but bev's still new to a lot of this. baby steps when she's still rattled and reeling are necessary. knowing dean's real job — as a hunter, not an fbi agent working some x-files — is all the context she needs for now. ]

My friends and I used to hang out in the woods as kids. We called them the Barrens
Even then we were never too far from town. But we got far enough, which is what we really wanted

[ strange to think about that now. to remember it after years of nothing. ]
