CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Dean Winchester
Age: 40
Canon: Supernatural

World Description: WIKI

History: WIKI

Death: Choked to death by an alternate timeline Castiel. We'll just say Sam wasn't quite quick enough with that banishing sigil, oops.

What are your plans for this character in-game? An ongoing exploration of Dean's mental and psychological trauma due to his possession by Michael and his own internal struggles with depression, guilt, self-loathing, suicidal ideation, and sexuality. I'd also be interested in having him take on a leadership role of some kind as he'll be pretty adamant about finding out what's really going on and he'll want to explore the further reaches of Beacon if possible. He'll probably also accidentally adopt half the kids in town, because that just kind of happens sometimes (he'll want to protect them as he has strong feelings about putting kids in danger).

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? Definitely the horror/exploration aspects! Dean (as it's canonically stated) thrives on trauma, so horror is pretty much his natural setting. Saving people, hunting things, family business. He's extremely well-versed in myth, lore, monsters, alternate universes, all that jazz, so he'll be the first to step up and get to the bottom of anything supernatural — and he's pretty bossy, like, all the time, so he'll want to find a way to be in charge of something, especially if that something happens to in his wheelhouse of spooky stuff. He's also more than willing to sacrifice himself for others, if given the opportunity; his job is to keep people safe, and he'll continue to do that even here. And if he gets to solve a good mystery, he's up for that too.

How does your character generally get along with other people? It depends on the person, but Dean's generally pretty sociable unless someone really rubs him the wrong way (don't threaten or insult anyone he cares about or it's an instant ticket to Dean's shit list) — he tends to clash with people who also have strong personalities, because he likes to be the boss and doesn't enjoy feeling threatened (or emasculated). He can sometimes charm his way out of a bad situation, but most of the time his big mouth tends to make it worse. There's definitely some over-confidence that can often (but not always) lead to conflict — which isn't to say he's always looking for a fight, but he does have a tendency to seek out conflict, especially when he's frustrated and things aren't going his way (sometimes punching is easier). Otherwise, he tries to act cool and laid back, like a Relatable Single Dad (who also takes every opportunity to flirt with women), has a wealth of pop culture references, music history and car trivia up his sleeves, and is easily amused by bad jokes. He pretends he isn't a nerd, but he totally is.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? [ This Is Fine Dog.gif ] Dean's not doing so hot! He'll be under the assumption that Michael, who wants to take over his body and destroy the world (including this one), is still trapped inside his mind and getting closer to escaping every day. He's basically a paranoid insomniac at the moment, on high alert about everything and definitely not happy to be here (he also isn't convinced in the slightest that this place is what it says it is, partially because there's no way that's how he died; Death herself told him there was only one possibility in which Michael didn't escape, so he's under the impression this is just another cosmic test or Thursday Night Shenanigans). This might cause him to be slightly more aggressive than he usually would be, but he's also great at pretending like everything is Just Peachy. Also, the last thing that happened (before he died) was being reunited with his (previously deceased) father, so he's pretty keen to get back to that (even if it's unlikely).

Skills/Abilities:

✪ Proficiency with most weapons, including (but not limited to) firearms, machetes, knives, and stakes. Can improvise/create weapons out of surrounding materials if desperate.
✪ Can hold his own in a hand-to-hand fight, though he's not trained in any one particular style of fighting (his father was in the Marines, so he would've been taught paramilitary skills and disciplines after John became a hunter after Mary's death).
✪ Basic first aid, can sew stitches in a bind, cauterize wounds.
✪ Knows his way around a car; if he wasn't a hunter, he'd be a mechanic. He rebuilt the Impala from practically scrap, so if any vehicles need repairing, he's your man.
✪ Can pick most locks, either with tools or by ear, depending on the lock. More advanced locks would be above his skillset.
✪ Various forms of torture (that he learned in Hell), though he'd prefer to never utilize these skills if at all possible.
✪ A decent cook, he can scrape up a meal when he wants to — taste-tested and approved by Sam.
✪ Damn good at poker, especially Texas Hold 'Em, and hustling pool.

Flaws/Weaknesses:

— WEAKNESSES —
✪ Dean's biggest, #1 gold star weakness is his brother Sam. He's literally died for Sam and would absolutely die for him again, no questions asked. The easiest way to get to Dean is put Sam in danger or manipulate the relationship he has with his brother (which, at the moment, is fine, but it's easy enough to rock the boat with their wealth of complicated history and codependent tendencies). If forced to choose between Sam and pretty much anyone else, he's always going to choose Sam. Canonically, they're basically incapable of living in a world where the other is dead (Dean only managed for a year because he made a promise to Sam he would) and will absolutely go to the greatest lengths to keep each other alive or find ways to bring each other back.
✪ Cas, who he cares about deeply, but not quite on the same level as Sam. He'd still be willing to sacrifice a lot for Cas' wellbeing, and there's a lot to play with regarding the nature of Dean's feelings for Cas as well (they're deeply, deeply buried and Dean, as of now, wouldn't consider them more than platonic, but there's a also lot of denial going on).
✪ Jo, whose death he still feels guilty for, even if it happened a long, long time ago. Now, he really would consider her a kid sister, and will be even more protective of her here because of how she died.
✪ Other (appable) characters not in game that could be used against him: his mother, Mary, who he couldn't bear to see die again, or his father, John (recently revived, as far as he knows); Jack Kline, the nephilim son of Lucifer and a human woman, whom Dean, Sam, and Cas have basically adopted as their surrogate son; Charlie Bradbury, one of Dean's best friends and another death he feels responsible for (in his own universe; an alternate universe Charlie is still alive back home); Bobby Singer, a surrogate father figure, who died on a job and later came back as a ghost (an alternate universe Bobby is also alive back home); Lisa Braeden, an old flame and the only woman Dean was ever really in love with (and was actually happy with, for about a year, the longest he's ever committed to a relationship, though this was partially due to the promise he made to Sam); Jody Mills and Claire Novak, fellow hunters (Claire being the daughter of Cas' vessel)
✪ Any other potential CR are going to be fuel for the fire of Dean's overprotectiveness; put someone he cares about in danger and his own safety flies out the window.
✪ Other weaknesses include: attractive women, decent booze, free food, porn, or a combination of all four. Normal human physical weaknesses also apply. His fleshy meatsuit has seen better days, though he is still in decent physical condition for a 40 year old man (killing monsters is a workout).

— FLAWS —
✪ Stubborn, tends to be "my way or the highway," doesn't like to take no for an answer
✪ Holds grudges indefinitely
✪ Can be extremely petty and/or passive aggressive when he's mad
✪ Belligerent, oftentimes to the point of violence
✪ Deep self-loathing, due to his time in Hell and also from the guilt of all the people he couldn't save, and feeling like he's inferior and not worthy of love, often refusing to let himself even try to be truly happy because he feels he doesn't deserve to be
✪ Paranoia, usually about the safety of the people he cares about; he can be overly overprotective in this regard, sometimes at the cost of the comfort and/or happiness of others -- that said, this can also potentially be seen as a strength in some cases as his suspicions tend to be correct (there is almost always something out to get him and the people close to him) but he does have issues trusting others to take care of themselves
✪ Questionable respect for women in certain situations, usually women in positions of power or authority (toxic masculinity contributes a lot to this; mostly he tends to be patronizing and/or objectifying but is easily shut down if called out)
✪ He was unofficially diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder when he admitted himself to a psychiatric hospital, the symptoms of which are: an excessive need for admiration (not that he'd admit it), disregard for others' feelings (he makes executive decisions that may affect other people without taking their feelings into account, e.g. selling his soul to bring back Sam, taking on the Mark of Cain, building the Ma'lak box to lock himself and Michael away forever), an inability to handle any criticism (without becoming extremely defensive), and a sense of entitlement (he's the Big Brother, the Leader, etc.)
✪ Reliance on alcohol as a coping mechanism; he's admitted to having more than 50 drinks per week, though whether he's cut back since 2010 (S5) is hard to say as he still drinks frequently enough that to anyone on the outside looking in it might be considered a "problem" (a functional alcoholic, but still an alcoholic)
✪ Commitment issues regarding romantic relationships in particular

Personality:

Dean's a soldier, has been since he was a child, and it's always been his job (whether he likes it or not) to take care of his little brother and follow in his father's (and mother's) footsteps of being a hunter. Family is the most important thing to Dean above all else and he'd do anything to protect what family he has left (including those who aren't his blood; hunters and those they're close to are all one big found family). He also views most things as his responsibility since he's the oldest, he's the one in charge, he's the one who'll figure things out (which is also why he harbors so much guilt, because if something goes wrong, he blames himself for it, even if it wasn't necessarily his fault). He likes to feel in control of something because for so much of his life he's been told he has a destiny he can't escape, and he's not exactly the type to just bend over and take it. He can be arrogant and selfish even when he's trying to put other people's best interests before his own because he truly does care about other people more than he cares about himself. At the end of the day, everything he does is for family — deep down, he still just wants to make his dad proud.

And though it's unlikely to be an issue for him here, Dean has a hard time settling down; he always needs to be on a job or doing something proactive. It's basically hardwired into him from years (decades) of being on the road and it's also a kind of coping mechanism (and an avoidance tactic) — if he's hunting, he's not having to deal with any of his other problems, like feelings. He's not great at talking about them and could definitely use a good therapist, but he does occasionally let himself open up around Sam or Cas when he's too exhausted to keep pretending and internalizing all his emotional baggage. Around strangers he's more closed off, projecting his usual cocky attitude; he rarely lets anyone see the Real Dean (broken, tired, hopeless), including himself because he's gotten so good at lying to himself and everyone else over the years. When he's in a rare good mood, he can even be funny (in a snarky himbo sort of way; he loves puns and juvenile humor) and he definitely enjoys making fun of other people (lovingly, usually). Basically, he tries his best to be a good person, a good brother, and a loyal friend, but sometimes he's kind of a dick.
